A bit about my ancestors
Since so many people out there take an interest in genealogy, I have decided to add a bit of information about my ancestry, much of which was compiled several decades ago by my late grandparents on my mother’s side, Egil and Astrid Schilvold.
I would like to make clear that I have no intention to brag. I am publishing some information about notable persons in my family mainly because it may be of help to people who are interested in the subject. Another reason it that I would like to hear from some of those distant relations. If you are one of them, let us exchange information or arrange a meeting!
With regards to “noble” descent, I firmly believe that no matter how many kings, queens, explorers or army officers your lineage is composed of, you still have to prove yourself worthy of your family name and your ancestry by living a decent life.
Lineage does not necessarily tell us anything at all about the character of a given individual, and even if you do not have a single remotely “noble” person in your pedigree, you can still be as noble a person as any if you decide to make an effort to be one.
Such considerations aside, I also believe we owe our forefathers and foremothers remembrance. It is natural to honor the people who we are indebted to for being alive, and that our societies are indebted to for having survived and developed. It is as simple as that.
And a knowledge of history is always beneficial to the human mind. Looking at how people have struggled and survived infuses us with strength and hope, but when we compare the likely length of our own life with that of the centuries and millennia, we are humbled. And if more of the people in this world were a little more humble, the world would no doubt be a better place.
Let us cherish and never forget our history.
